Encounters setups
This is the first level I would design and implement on my own. Even with little experience as a designer the final product turned out pretty darn good. I have to give credit for this to the team. We had some great art and technical leads on the project. Because of the guidelines provided by them I was able to create such an outstanding asset.
I didn't create the enemies that you find through out the level. This is one of my first experiences working with established assets to create a product. I didn't find it much of a challenge and simply incorporated them into my encounters which I was very happy with in the end.
The catapults were my idea. They worked out pretty well for a kid with less then a year under his belt.
This is also my first real design of a boss encounter. Most everything was implemented as I designed it. However, the one thing that did not turn out how I thought it would was the use of the powers. You can see in my videos that the special attacks are over the top. So much so that they obscure the gameplay. They even cause the game to slow down. There wasn't much I could do about this. I was a junior and the call as to how the progression of powers was implemented was out of my hands.
I don't think that it ruins the encounter but it does take something away from what it could have been. The boss is still visually interesting and the encounter still compelling. It just loses some of the challenge that I had hoped to impart on the final design.
A great experience full of lessons that I still call back to even to this day.
